Katie Paterson is a Glasgow-born visual artist who graduated from ECA in 2004, before completing her MFA at the Slade School of Art three years later.
Now living and working in Berlin, Paterson’s practice is concerned with ecology, technology and astronomy. Throughout her career she has presented a body of work which has drifted from the physical landscapes of Earth, to the incalculability of the universe, often investigating the mysteries of our galaxy through a framework of scientific and conceptual projects. She uses the tangible object to capture the intangible nature of the cosmos and beyond.
Paterson’s artworks are a visual representation of a challenging and laborious research process often involving collaborations with celebrated scientists and leading institutions around the world. An example of this is her piece, Earth–Moon–Earth (Moonlight Sonata Reflected from the Surface of the Moon). Paterson rendered Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata into Morse-code, to be reflected off the surface of the moon by radio transmission. The sounds of the journey were then composed into a new score and looped on a self-playing piano in the gallery space.
Paterson’s affinity with space and time is ever present within Between poles and tides. Her project, Future Library, will only be completed in 100 years time, while 9 Modified Clocks present the ‘time’ on each of the 9 planets in our solar system. Both these works are on show, and can be viewed in Gallery One until 6th May.
